Week 15 Analysis- The Joy Luck Club- American Translation
- In this Chapter of The Joy Luck Club, Rose Hsu was consumed
by her divorce and forget that the one person who can help her and guide her is
her mother. She used a psychiatrist to expressed her feeling and that made her
mother furious. Her mother was asking why she rather talk to psychiatrist than
her “A mother is best. A mother knows what you are inside” She said, a
psychiatrist will only make you hulihudu and make you see heimongmog”. Her mother once told her why she was confused all the time. She
said that she was without wood. Born without wood so that I listened to too
many people. She knew this, because once she had almost become this way. At first, Rose Hsu did not listen to her mother regarding strong and tough. During her divorce, Ted her ex-husband was telling to leave their house because he is getting married. He offered Rose Hsu ten thousand dollars but realized that she is being bullied by her husband and she had to stand up for it. She realized that nobody can tell her that she cannot make decision for herself so Ted will decides for her life.
- We often forget that many things that happen to us, our
parents put symbols or meaning into it. A good example was Jing-Mei story of “Best
quality”. Her mother believes that in order to have best quality in life, you
choose the best quality of things such as crab. Suyuan believes that you have
to choose the feistiest crab with no broken leg and grab to the pencil as soon
as you poke it. This symbolized “best quality”. But Jing-mei still picked the
broken leg during dinner and do not care what other people thinks. For her, it
is a crab and nothing else. Suyuan explained that she did not eat the legless
crab because it had died before she cooked it. Only you Jing-mei choose the
worse of the two remaining crabs, because anyone else would have taken the
better one—the “best quality” available. She reminded Jing-Mei’s way of
thinking is different from that of most people. She gave Jing-mei a jade
pendant, telling her that it was her “life’s importance.” She told Jing-Mei not
to listen to anybody and strive to be successful on her own merit and she should
not listen to people like Waverly with
bad intention and act that they are on her side.
- Rose Hsu and Jing-Mei realizes that both of their mother were right that you have to be strong and stand up and nobody can tell them what to do or decides everything for them. This culture of wisdom are very important that signifies like lesson to learn from their mother's advise
I think the argument about the crab is all about personal opinion, but those opinions are influenced by your culture. Some cultures are materialistically driven, some by fame or by fortune, and others by family or food. I think it's important for the readers to know this when reading this story, because the mother is trying to get her daughter to see the importance of quality of living over just living and accepting something as it is. Improvement is always welcomed.
ReplyDeleteHi Ginalyn,
ReplyDeleteI find the crab metaphor to be very interesting. I definitely feel that is something that is cultural. I like the quote “A mother is best. A mother knows what you are inside”. This statement is so true for most. My mom is like my therapist and as my daughter gets older, I hope she continues to talk to me about her issues and seek my advice.
